Biogeography: Checklist records: Austria, Germany, Great Britain, New Guinea, New Zealand, Sonoran Desert, Sweden and Norway, and United States and Canada (continental).

Ecology: Biotroph; algicolous (on cyanobacteria) or lichenicolous; bryophytic or corticolous; substrate calciferous.

Thallus: Indistinct.

Reproduction Strategy: With sexual (and possible asexual) stages. Ascocarps: Perithecioid, orbicular, not emerging, becoming adnate to soon sessile. Wall: Not fused. Margin: External filaments absent. Exciple: Brown (reddish to black-) or white. Periphyses: Present. Hymenium: Iodine reaction: Lugol’s negative, not hemiamyloid. Interascal Hyphae: Absent (only in M. tjibodensis absent) or present, scarcely branched, not or scarcely anastomosed. Hypothecium: Brown (reddish to black-) or white.

Asci: Tholus thickened, not amyloid; ocular chamber indistinct (or small); dehiscence bitunicate; exoascus not amyloid, not hemiamyloid.

Ascospores: c. 4 to c. 8 per ascus, broadly ellipsoid, ellipsoid, ovoid, or fusiform, 6-23 µm long, 3-9 µm wide, obtuse or aciculate; septa absent; wall thin or thick (some species with gelatinous appendices at the poles), distinctly differentiated into primary and secondary wall (some species with gelatinous appendices at the poles), hyaline, not ornamented.

Conidiomata: Absent resp. not observed or present (only known from M. tjibodensis); pycnidial.

Conidiogeneous Cells: Apical. Conidia: Ellipsoid; microconidial.
