Ecology: Biotroph; lichenized; substrate non-calciferous.

Thallus: Crustose, irregularly not subdivided parts, areolate (primarily areolate) (more or less); separate thallus parts thin (0.2 - 0.5 mm). Thallus Outline: Simple; persistent; black or grey. Upper Surface: Grey, brown, or grey-brown, smooth or rough; not sorediate. Lower Surface: Not rhizinate.

Reproduction Strategy: Only known as sterile, asexually reproducing form or with sexual (and possible asexual) stages. Ascocarps: Not emerging, becoming adnate, .4-.8 mm in diam.. Margin: Excluded (mostly), indistinct or distinct. Disk: Plane to sub-weakly convex, black to dark brown, epruinose to pruinose. Exciple: Black to green to brown. Parathecium (proper excipulum): Dark brown or grey-brown. Amphithecium (thalline excipulum): Present. Epithecium: Apical cells distinctly swollen, brown or olive. Hymenium: White. Hypothecium: Black, brown, or brownish red.

Ascospores: Ellipsoid, 8-11 µm long, 4.5-7 µm wide.

Conidiomata: Immersed.

Pycnidia: Globular or cerebriform (rarely). Conidia: Filiform or curved; 13-20 µm long.
