Biogeography: Cosmopolitan.

Ecology: Biotroph; lichenized; episubstratic; substrate non-calciferous.

Thallus: Indistinct or crustose (verrucose to rimose, areoles irregularly shaped, with rough surface, c. 0.4-0.5 mm, max. 0.8 mm diam.); separate thallus parts.05-.2 mm thick. Thallus Size and Differentiation: Large (up to 60 mm diam.). Upper Surface: White (occasionally more or less rusty coloured; creamy), plane.

Ascocarps: Forming independently from the host thallus or mycelium (round to roundish, dispersed to crowded), soon sessile, strongly constricted at the base, 25-90 per cm², .5-(1.5) mm in diam.. Margin: More or less persistent, distinct (at first), 60-120 µm wide. Disk: Plane or weakly convex, black (matt), epruinose. Exciple: Brown (to dark brown). Epithecium: Apical cells olive ('olivaceous'). Hymenium: 60-110 µm high; white (I+ blue, Iconc+ blue). Subhymenium: 10-20 µm high; white. Hypothecium: Dark brown (150-270 µm thick).

Ascospores: Ellipsoid, (9)-9.7-13.7-(18) µm long, (6)-6.9-7.2-(9.5) µm wide.

Conidia: 9-10.6-14 µm long.

Secondary Metabolites: Norstictic acid (and constictic acid (?); two chemotypes observed) or stictic acid.

Spot Tests: Medulla: K –, C –, PD – ascocarp margin (in section): K + deep yellow, C – (P +/- orange).
