Ecology: Biotroph; lichenized; corticolous or saxicolous.

Thallus: Foliose, subdivided into main parts, and secondary parts, lobed; lobes sub-elongate or linear (add state 8: irregular;), horizontal; plane; branches bifacial; separate thallus parts.5-2 mm wide. Thallus Size and Differentiation: 3-6 cm in diameter; main branches basally not constricted; apex rounded. Thallus Outline: Margin crenate. Upper Surface: Grey, plane or subconvex, matt, smooth; not fissurate; not foveate; not convoluted; faintly maculate; without patches; epruinose; not pseudocyphellate; not wrinkled; ciliate; cilia marginal; without hairs; not isidate; without isidiomorphs; not papillate, not pustulate; not sorediate; not tuberculate; not lobulate. Lower Surface: Present, black, black in the centre, black along the margin; attached by holdfasts; not cyphellate; not wrinkled; rhizines moderately abundant or abundant, extending all across the lower surface, black, branched, irregularly branched; not tuberculate.

Hydrochasic Thallus Movement: Not performing hygrochasic thallus movement.

Upper Cortex: Double-layered.

Reproduction Strategy: Usually with sexual (and possible asexual) stages. Ascocarps: Apothecioid, forming all across the thallus surface, all across the surface, moderately abundant, 1-3 mm in diam.. Margin: Crenulate, epruinose; not sorediate; not isidiate; without pseudocyphellae pseudocyphellae; not ciliate; not hirsute. Disk: Brown.

Asci: Dehiscence lecanoralean.

Ascospores: c. 8 per ascus, broadly ellipsoid, 6-8 µm long, 5 µm wide.

Conidiomata: Absent resp. not observed.

Secondary Metabolites: Present; only in the upper part of the cortex, throughout the cortex, or throughout the thallus medulla, atranorin (in upper cortex (+ chloroatranorin; + gyrophoric acid in the medulla)), chloroatranorin, or gyrophoric acid, metabolite(s) of unresolved identity: absent.
